The Paula Lerner Visiting Rebecca Mac's |
|
Rebecca Mac is a Boston-based violinist who grew up in our BETC community and we are thrilled to have her return as our 2024 Paula Lerner Visiting Artist! Rebecca performs regularly in various ensembles including Mamaliga, a contemporary quartet known for their original Klezmer and Eastern European folk-inspired compositions, Zol Zayn, a Klezmer dance band, and Zunroyz, a trio unearthing string repertoire from the Jewish music archives. Rebecca has performed at renowned music festivals, such as KlezKanada, Yiddish Summer Weimar and Yiddish New York. A grant recipient of the 2022-24 Mass Cultural Council’s Traditional Arts Apprenticeship program, Rebecca is exploring the connections between Greek, Turkish and Jewish Music. A regular in the Jewish music scene, Rebecca also runs an inclusive Klezmer jam in downtown Boston. She holds a degree in violin performance from Berklee College of Music. Workshop • Saturday, April 27 • 4:00-5:15pm
Discover the rich world of Yiddish dance with Rebecca and dance leader Adah Hetko. We’ll dive into the history and cultural context of different Yiddish dance forms, and what makes it look and sound distinctly Jewish! By the end of the workshop, you’ll be able to tell the difference between a “zhok”, a “bulgar”, a “freylakh” and a “khosidl” just by hearing the band play, AND be able to dance them all with steps and styling that would make even your bubbe kvell!
Open to BETC Members only
Concert • Saturday, April 27 • 7:30
The Zol Zayn concert will include music for lively dancing as well as contemplative listening. Zol Zayn melds boisterous and lilting melodies from old-country Yiddishland with new-ear sensibilities and intricate arrangements that will make you dance, laugh and cry—perhaps all at once! Dance leader Adah Hetko will join the band and teach us a variety of dance steps. The essence of the dance is in the spirit of the music, so everyone can participate and enjoy.

Remembering Paula. Paula Lerner, our dear friend and former Temple member, died of breast cancer in 2012 at the age of 52. An award-winning photographer and journalist, Paula was ceaselessly curious about the world and people. Each year, Beth El Temple Center invites an inspiring artist or group of artists to come and share their art with us.
